Plastic Boardwalk Planks For Coney Island?

So, what's with the recycled plastic planks that have been placed in some parts of the Coney Island boardwalk. Some speculate that it's only a pilot project to test them on some of the most dilapidated parts of the boardwalk including the pier. Perhaps the image above displays these plastic planks.

Last year the New York Post wrote about the plastic planks for the boardwalk stating that the city plans of replacing most of the damaged wooden planks with them.

The NY Post wrote:

It is part of a pilot program set for West 12th to West 15th streets in the heart of the amusement district, and also calls for replacing the existing timber foundation underneath with cement, said Parks Department spokesman Philip Abramson. The city is expected to begin soliciting bids for the job Friday, and if the pilot program is a success, the entire three-mile boardwalk - which officials estimate would cost $200 million to fix - could become plastic.

First of all either all of the planks should be replaced or you'll get an ugly mis-match, secondly, plastic planks may me much more durable and less costly in the long run but would diminish the texture and colors that the wooden boardwalk emanate from the sunlight. As a Coney Island USA message board poster proclaims; Coney Island going plastic for its boardwalk will surely cheapen it.
