Temporary Amusements

The Brooklyn Daily Eagle's Sara Ryley- who has been diligently covering the controversies surrounding the redevelopment of Coney Island- reports that Lola Starr's dream of installing a temporary roller rink by the boardwalk "totally going to happen." The official details of the plan will be announced sometime within the next few weeks.

Later in the same column, Ryley reports on some suggestions that Jasper Goldman of the Municipal Art Society made for improving the city's plan in a recent newsletter. One suggestion that really stands out is Mr. Goldman's assertion that "the city should create an interim plan to ensure Coney Island remains a destination during the development phase." In particular, he suggests features such as "food and antique markets, music and performance spaces, and art installations."

Considering that a completion date of 2019 has been thrown around, this suggestion is extremely well taken. We can't simply spend the next decade waiting for Coney Island to be redeveloped; we need to be able to enjoy Coney Island in the meantime.

That being said, a roller rink isn't a bad start.
